Falafel, Lost Sharks, & the list of Commencement Speakers

A single batch of artisan bread yields about four loaves... and there is no way that my apartment can eat all of that before it hardens, so what is a baker to do? Bring it to work, of course. I sent an email out to the other interns, but no one responded and so Benedicta and I decimated the loaf.

Last night after my audition, Mashaal (director of Career Services at TWC) asked if I could meet with her at 2:15pm today to go over my commencement speech again. Last night they had given me specific feedback on what they would like to see done differently, and this was the time slot that Mashaal could listen to the edits. I took part of my lunch break to skype with her from the smaller conference room. Bonus: it has a huge window, and it was so very warm! The air conditioner has been working ...  a little too well! We're walking around bundled up, but it seems as though it gets colder with each passing hour.

Yay for onion and garlic allergies! Well. No... Yay for a restaurant recognizing these as possible allergens.

Class was canceled tonight! It was strange being at the office so late on a Wednesday, but you know what they say: make hay while the sun shines! My officemates and I took a bus to have dinner at Amsterdam Falafelshop on 14th St. (NW).. Holy cow. I had wondered what falafel was, and now I know. It's a delicious sort of middle eastern hush puppy, but instead of being a bread ball, it's made from veggies and chickpeas and ... some other things? I'm honestly not sure, but it was wonderful. What wasn't wonderful was being met with this poster (left).

Actually, it was wonderful, because it kept me from biting into things I'm allergic to.

Unfortunately, this meant most of the menu.

It was still delicious.

Cucumbers, tomatoes, and red cabbage on top of my falafel. Mmmm!

On the way home, we came across this poster:

So y'all know... be on the look out...

Since we didn't have class, my darling Rachel (check out her TWC blog!!) and I met up at the RAF and toted my full-size comforter to the field down the block for the NoMa Summer Screen, which shows movies for free on Wednesday nights on an enormous blow-up screen... Check out that crowd!!

.... But we didn't stay. We arrived pretty early, but with plans to work out this evening and feeling a little sore because of the uneven ground beneath our blanket, we packed up and left just as the sun dipped low enough to allow the movie to begin.
Back at the RAF, I threw the now grassy blanket in the washing machine and taught Rachel to cloak artisan loaves. While they were rising, we went into the gym on the P1 (basement) level. My. Legs. Are. Jelly. But even so, it felt wonderful to work out! It's been too long since spring semester.

This evening everyone who auditioned for commencement received an email. There was a moment (or ten) of hesitation before I opened my email; while I stared at the subject line on my phone, Rachel squealed in delight (having received an email as well) and told me what my own screen confirmed.

I am speaking next month at commencement.
Blessings,
Clarice
