I missed the sweet spot on the metro this morning. Riding with the work crowd that gets to the office at 9:30am was not a fun experience. I became intimately acquainted with a very tall young man's right suit-covered scapula, and someone else became acquainted with mine. You learn that even if you make yourself as small as possible, all the extra room you create around yourself is seized mercilessly by the people around you.
First thing Monday morning, as my legs were still feeling the hike from Saturday, my other officemate decided to ask Benedicta and I if we wanted to ride bikes from Rosslyn metro station to Mount Vernon (about twenty miles), and then hike around Mt. Vernon.... We stared at him like he had lost his marbles. Perhaps we'll meet him halfway in Alexandria. A 40 mile bike trip plus hiking is just not an attractive prospect...
Penn Social had an intern networking event this evening. Although I had RSVPed through linktank.com (get your free account!), I found myself wearily lying my head down on my desk while my coworkers chatted in the background, and thought to myself that there was no way I was going to feel up to going out.
As others were leaving to go to lunch, I left to go home. I haven't been resting well for the past week (at least). As an intern you're required to clock between 32 and 36 hours per week, which is enough that you get the nearly-full-time experience, but flexible enough that you don't have to kill yourself amassing hours after having to take of half or entire days for scheduled TWC programming. Or, in this case, to sleep so you can be productive later in the week.
My roommates were home because they had programming, and seemed surprised to see me. The apartment was a bit noisy until Roommates #1 and #2 left to go downstairs, and after the peace settled, Roommate #4 and I enjoyed an afternoon nap. I woke up here and there (no doubt my mind crying, "Aaaaaahhhhh, we're supposed to be at work!!! Why are you sleeping!!!!"), and finally got up to cook dinner... I desperately needed to sleep, and while I was still tired, I certainly felt better.
Wednesday of next week is my Public Policy Dialogue with Senator Dianne Feinstein's (D-CA) legislative assistant... and I have no idea what I want to talk about. We have a pre-meeting research worksheet to complete, so hopefully that will shed some light on possible topics.
But first ... bed.
