Programming was scheduled for 11AM, and so I had decided that it was going to be a lazy morning-- but I still woke up early. The time that I had before I had to get ready for the day was spent wisely: I read in bed for a couple of hours, a luxury I haven't had this summer.
Most of the interns that I've talked to don't go to work on programming days, but the programming events for my specific program have been consistently short. Today we were set free in the Archives, and it was only for an hour, so I chose to take the morning off and go in during the afternoon. Although the dress code for the programming was casual, the dress code at work isn't, and so I tucked my heels into my purse and made my way to the National Archives with Roommate #4 and her boyfriend.
The archives were wonderful, and I really hope that I can go back on one of the remaining weekends. I explored on my own, silently allowing the magnitude of the rich treasures I saw to wash over me; it sounds awfully introverted, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. In one dim room, they have one of the copies of the Magna Carta; I had seen copies of this document previously in England, but the power of it still hit me.
Unfortunately, photography was forbidden inside because visitors were not following the no-flash rule. Not wanting to have a lifetime ban or prison record as my DC souvenir (key chains and hoodies will be satisfactory, thank you!), my camera stayed in my purse. Being interrogated would have made for a crazy story, but that's probably not what Dr. Patty is going to want hear about in Chapel this fall... #WaysToMakeYourMomProud?
A little over an hour later, I went to work feeling a little uncomfortable. Welcome to Summer in DC! It was an extremely humid day, and the train AC seemed to be as reliable as the red line (not at all). There are innumerable worse things than feeling overly warm, though, and I count my blessings. The heat index is awful (high 90s and getting worse), but what an experience I had today! I highly doubt I'll look back and remember that horrifically hot Monday. Having shivers while looking at our nation's crown jewels -- that's what I'll remember.
There's a sweet, family-owned Greek Deli across the street from work. You know the kind, where there's barely enough room for two people to pass in the aisle between the door and the counter. The food was amazing! I had an allergic reaction to the tzatziki sauce, and only ate about half of my lunch because of it, but it was still amazing.

The rest of the day was quiet; I stayed at my desk working on a project for m supervisor and a woman from another department. Time flew by and suddenly the office was pretty quiet. I noticed the time when another intern poked his head into my deserted office and introduced himself as I was wrapping things up for the evening.
Highlight of the day: I got mail!! It was wonderful! Snail mail and handwritten notes are the best kinds of surprises. God has blessed me with such beautiful friendships at LCU.
